The Democratic Party (DP) has asked the government of Uganda not to take for granted the sanctions put on its leaders by the United Kingdom (UK), stating that the property and accounts that have been concealed could be real and other government officials could also have property in Europe.
This statement was made during the party’s weekly press conference that took place on May 14, 2024, at the party headquarters at City House in Kampala.
The party acting spokesperson, Ismail Kirya, noted that the UK officials are not irrational to say that Speaker Anita Annet Among has property and accounts in the UK, citing that the relevant investigative bodies of the government should investigate further.
“The Inspector General of Government should investigate more and find out if the said property really exists because this property can be registered under other names but is actually owned by the speaker. The Minister of Foreign Affairs should go to the UK and seek evidence of the said property. This should be done for all government officials,” he said.
Kirya further urged the government to bring the iron sheets saga back to the table for more investigations to be done, stating that a lot of officials walked free and even took back the iron sheets to the stores.
“The vice president, prime minister, and finance minister were all named in the saga, but none of them have been punished. Should we say that others are above the law?” he queried.
The British government slapped sanctions on the Speaker of Parliament and the other two ministers for being involved in corruption allegations. In a meeting with President Museveni on April 30, 2024, the British Ambassador to Uganda stated that Speaker Among has property, which includes houses and accounts in the UK, which have been concealed.
