A violent accident on Kampala- Gulu highway has killed a Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) soldier and left eight others nursing injuries after a Fuso truck collided head-on with a vehicle in the official convoy of Hon Huda Olele, the State Minister for Defense and Veterans Affairs on Sunday evening.
The accident occurred at approximately 7:45 PM in Kalule Village, Nyimbwa Sub-County, Luwero District.
According to a police statement issued by ASP S Twiineamazima, PRO Savannah Region, a white Fuso Fighter truck, registration number UAN 394Z, was traveling northbound from Kampala when its driver attempted a dangerous overtaking maneuver near Kalule trading center.
During this maneuver, the truck rammed head-on into a green Toyota Hilux, registration UG 0388D, which was part of Minister Olele’s convoy heading toward Kampala.
The impact resulted in the immediate death of RA 275589 LCPL Moses Edongoto, who was traveling in the convoy vehicle. Six other army officers and two civilians sustained varying degrees of injuries.
“The collision resulted in the immediate death of one army officer, LCPL Edongoto Moses. Additionally, six army officers and two civilians sustained injuries and were rushed to General Military Hospital Bombo for treatment,” ASP Twiineamazima said.
Police said both vehicles involved in the crash have since been towed to Bombo Police Station as investigators work to reconstruct the events leading up to the collision.
“Preliminary findings indicate that the cause of the crash was reckless overtaking by the driver of the Fuso truck,” he added
The accident caused major traffic disruption along the Kampala Gulu highway as emergency responders and security teams secured the scene.
Authorities are yet release details on whether the truck driver survived or was detained. However, all the victims were rushed to General Military Hospital Bombo for urgent medical attention.
