Cedric Ndilima Babu, a member of one of Uganda’s most well-known political families, has died at 46 after a long battle with heart disease. His passing is a loss of a promising leader who combined his family’s legacy with his own work in media, sports, and politics.
Cedric was the son of Capt. Francis Babu, a respected politician and former Member of Parliament for Kampala Central, and Hon Margaret Zziwa, a former Kampala mayor and legislator. Growing up in this influential family, Cedric was exposed to public service and politics from an early age, and many expected him to follow their path.
But Cedric chose to follow his own path. He attended Namasagali College and later studied abroad, including in the United States, where he learnt media and communication skills. When he returned to Uganda, he became a well-known television producer and media personality.
As CEO of Kinetic Management Group, Cedric managed some of Uganda’s top entertainers. He also loved sports and served as chairman of the Uganda National Olympic Committee (UNOC), working hard to support young athletes.
Cedric’s work in media, sports, and politics made him different from many leaders. He showed that leadership can come from many areas not just politics but also culture and youth empowerment.
In 2021, Cedric ran for the Kampala Central parliamentary seat with the National Resistance Movement (NRM). Although he narrowly lost to the current MP, Muhammad Nsereko, Cedric stayed active in politics. He was popular with young people and connected to the Muhoozi Project, a political movement supporting Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, UPDF Chief of Defense Forces. Cedric was also a close friend of Gen Muhoozi, making him an important figure in his circle.
Sadly, Cedric’s health worsened recently. After treatment in Kigali and Nairobi, doctors said he urgently needed a heart transplant. His family started a crowdfunding campaign to raise UGX 1.5 billion for treatment in London, but the target was not reached in time. This raised questions about healthcare access and support for public figures from wealthy families.
Cedric’s death leaves a big gap not only in his family but also in the areas he worked in. As the only son of two important leaders, he was seen as the future of Uganda’s political and social leadership. His work showed how politics, media, and sports can come together to inspire young people.
He is survived by his son and leaves behind a legacy of hope, hard work, and service. Funeral plans are yet to be announced as the country mourns a life that ended too soon but touched many.
