Gov’t Closes all Day Scholar Schools in Kenya ahead of Demonstrations

The government of Kenya has ordered for the closure of all day primary and secondary schools in Nairobi, Mombasa and Kisumu ahead of anti-government demonstration set to be staged by the Azimio opposition association from Wednesday, July 19, 2023.

Azimio La Umoja one of the coalition of the party said that the reason for this protest is to push government to lower the cost of living said that the demonstration will end only when President William Ruto agrees to review the contentious finance act 2023.

In a statement signed by Interior CS Prof. Kithure Kindiki and his Education counterpart Ezekiel Machogu, the two ministers noted that credible intelligence reports have revealed plans by a number of rogue elements to attack specific schools in the two counties in order to unleash terror and violence on the public during the demonstration.

“As a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of school children, it has been decided that ALL day Primary and Secondary schools within Nairobi and Mombasa cities SHALL remain closed,” Prof Kithure stated.

In the same statement, Prof. Kindiki said that the Ministry of Education will announce the resumption of learning in a foresaid schools upon assessment of the security in the course of the week,” Prof. Kindiki said.

He then warned Kenyans against participating in the demonstrations saying that the police will accordingly deal with demonstrators.
