The Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) has noted that all used motor vehicles will undergo destination inspection at a fee of USD 140, in line with the UNBS inspection and clearance of imports regulations 2022.
This was confirmed in a statement addressed to Importers, Exporters and dealers of used motor vehicles by Daniel Nagalama, the acting Executive Director of UNBS, on September 28, 2023.
“All used motor vehicles imported from September 23, 2023 to November 01, 2023, will undergo destination inspection, at a fee of USD 140, or its equivalent, prior to their release from customs –controlled areas, and no surcharge will be paid at the port entry,” Nagalama said.
He added that, effective November 02, 2023, all imported used motor vehicles coming from Japan, the United Kingdom, Singapore, South Africa, the United Arab Emirates and other countries must undergo Pre-export verification of conformity ( PVoc) with UNBS, prior to importation into Uganda.
Nagalama emphasized that vehicles arriving in Uganda without certificates of Road worthiness shall be subjected to a 15% Cost, Insurance, and Freight (CIF) valve.
“Vehicles will also be subjected to destination inspection, which will require destination inspection fee of USD 140, for each motor vehicle prior to insurance of import clearance
certificate,” he added.
Inspection of imports coming into Uganda is one of the UNBS mandates that emerged from the UNBS Act Cap 327 which became operational in 1989. Import Inspection duties entail enforcing the requirements of the Uganda standards in order to protect the health and safety of the public and the environment against dangerous and sub-standard products.
