The U.S. Embassy in Tanzania has issued a security alert warning American citizens of potential travel disruptions and heightened risks amid calls for nationwide anti-government demonstrations scheduled for December 9.
The alert follows widespread unrest surrounding Tanzania’s October 29th elections, which saw destruction of public infrastructure, attacks on civilians, internet shutdowns, and major travel disruptions.
In a notice released to the US Embassy in Dar es salaam on December 1st, 2025, cautioned the travelers of the possibility of nationwide curfews, roadblocks, canceled ferries to Zanzibar, flight cancellations, and other restrictions on movement.
U.S. officials also noted that local security authorities have increased scrutiny of foreign nationals. They reminded the public that under Tanzanian law, the sharing of pictures or videos that may cause panic is a criminal offense.
“Security forces have searched electronics for evidence of connection to unrest or politically sensitive content,” the Embassy wrote.
American citizens are advised to stay away from any demonstrations or crowds, keep an emergency supply of water, food, medication, and cash on hand, and to comply with any declared curfews. The alert stresses verification of flights by telephone before going out to the airport.
For assistance, the U.S. Embassy in Dar es Salaam is located at 686 Old Bagamoyo Road, Msasani, P.O. Box 9123, Dar es Salaam. The Embassy can be reached at +255-22-229-4000.
