Major General Jack Bakasumba, the Chief of Joint Staff of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), has lauded the British government for its continued support in training the Ugandan military to improve their capabilities.

Maj Gen Bakasumba made these remarks on June 7, 2024, during a meeting with a delegation from the British military at the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs headquarters in Mbuya.

The British delegation was led by the Head of British Defence Staff to East Africa, Brigadier General Olly Bryant.

“The training has improved the capabilities and resilience of UPDF soldiers, which has helped to maintain peace and stability in Somalia,” Maj Gen Bakasumba said.

He emphasized the need to build a patriotic and robust force in Somalia to defend the country.

The General expressed the UPDF’s willingness to strengthen the existing good relationship and continue working together with the British military.

Brig Gen Bryant, however, commended the UPDF for its efforts in maintaining peace and stability in Somalia.

“I commend the UPDF for its efforts in maintaining peace and stability in Somalia,” he said.

He pledged to continue supporting the UPDF, especially in advanced training that will help improve the resilience and capabilities of its soldiers.

The continued British support for the UPDF’s training and capacity-building efforts underscores the strong partnership between the two countries, which is crucial for maintaining regional security and stability.

Present in the meeting were: Joint Staff Training and Doctrine, Brig Gen Alex Olupot; UK Defence Attache to Uganda, Lt Col Toby Barrington Barnes, and other UPDF senior officers.
