The Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) has set up a temporary pedestrian crossing on Katonga Bridge for the safe passage of pilgrims on their way to Namugongo martyr shrines in Wakiso district.
On Thursday, May 25, 2023, UNRA confirmed that several pilgrims trekking to Namugongo Martyrs Shrine for the June 3rd celebration had crossed through the Katongo bridge along Kamapala-Masaka Highwya using the temporal structure. The bridge was partly washed away by the water.
“Our team on site has set up a temporary pedestrian crossing at Katonga, ensuring safe passage for pilgrims. The provision is for only pilgrims heading from Masaka to Kampala and will be available on their return journey after Martyrs Day,” UNRA confirmed.
On Tuesday, more than 75 pilgrims from Kakoma parish in the Isingiro area were stuck in Lukaya after the Katonga Bridge was destroyed by significant flooding earlier this month.
Every year on June 3rd, Christians trek to Namugongo Anglican and Catholic shrines to celebrate Martyrs Day.
