The Uganda Railways Corporation (URC) officially launched its new Board of Directors in a ceremony led by Deputy Registrar of the Inspectorate of Courts, HW Festo Nsenga, at the Ministry of Works and Transport.
The event was attended by Minister of Works and Transport, Gen. Edward Katumba Wamala, and State Minister Hon. Fred Byamukama, on 19th December, 2025, who together outlined a clear mandate for the incoming board.
Speaking at the launch, Gen. Katumba Wamala emphasized the strategic importance of the railway sector for Uganda’s economic growth.
“Logistics movement and railways are at the core of this country. The revival of the railway network is not optional but a duty,” Gen Katumba stated.
“I appeal to the Board to supervise with utmost care, maintain integrity, and prioritize the modernization of railways to promote trade in the region,” he added.
The nine-member board, chaired by Hon. Daudi Migereko, is tasked with overseeing the revival and modernization of the railway network to boost both domestic and regional trade.
Migereko, in his opening remarks, promised to build on the successes of the previous board while charting a new path forward for the Corporation.
Nsenga, who administered the oaths of office, reminded the members of the moral and legal responsibilities their roles entail, urging them to uphold these principles in all decisions.
Permanent Secretary, Bageya Waiswa, welcomed the board’s composition, which includes representatives from both the Ministry of Works and Transport and the Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development, signaling a coordinated government approach to reviving the rail sector.
The launch comes amid broader efforts to modernize Uganda’s railways, including initiatives aimed at enhancing regional trade links, notably between Australia and New Zealand, and strengthening the country’s logistics infrastructure.
