Uganda Airlines has officially received a Boeing 737-800 aircraft under a wet-lease partnership with Ethiopian Airlines, strengthening the national carrier’s operational capacity and expanding its growing fleet.
The aircraft, welcomed on Tuesday, becomes the first of two Boeing 737-800s expected under the partnership arrangement aimed at improving operational reliability, increasing passenger capacity, and enhancing route connectivity across the airline’s regional network.
In a statement announcing the arrival, Uganda Airlines described the new addition as a strategic step toward fleet expansion and service improvement.
“This strategic addition strengthens our operations, increases capacity, and enhances connectivity across our growing network as we work towards greater reliability and expansion,” the airline stated.
The latest addition increases Uganda Airlines’ operational fleet to eight aircraft, comprising:
- 2 Airbus A330-800neo wide-body aircraft
- 4 Bombardier CRJ900 regional jets
- 1 Airbus A320-200
- 1 newly added Boeing 737-800
The Boeing 737-800 is operating under a wet-lease arrangement, meaning Ethiopian Airlines will provide the aircraft together with crew, maintenance, and insurance support.
Aviation analysts say the aircraft is expected to provide immediate operational flexibility on regional routes with increasing passenger demand, including Nairobi, Johannesburg, Lagos, and other African destinations.
The development comes as Uganda Airlines continues implementing its long-term fleet expansion strategy supported by government plans to acquire additional aircraft over the coming years.
The airline has increasingly positioned itself to strengthen regional connectivity, tourism, trade, and cargo movement while competing within Africa’s rapidly growing aviation market.
Officials say the partnership with Ethiopian Airlines will also help Uganda Airlines stabilize operations and maintain schedule reliability as the carrier continues to expand its network and modernize its fleet.
