The Speaker of Parliament, Annet Anita Among, has officially announced her intentions to depose her predecessor Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga as the National Resistance Movement (NRM)’s 2nd Female National Vice Chairperson.
Speaking during a meeting with the executive delegation of the Uganda Urban Council Speakers Association at Parliament on Wednesday, November 27, 2024, Among clarified to the public that her bid was not regional but rather for the whole of Uganda.
Initially, though the association had encouraged her to contest for the position of NRM Vice Chairperson for the Eastern Region, the Speaker clarified that her interest lies in contending for the higher role of National Female Vice Chairperson.
“I am not standing for the position of Eastern Region. I am going to stand for National Vice Chairperson (Female). It is the one I am standing for, not Eastern. I am for the whole country, not only the Eastern Region,“ Among said.

The position, which is the third-highest in the NRM’s National Executive Council (NEC), is currently held by former Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga.
In 2020, Kadaga defeated Persis Namuganza to secure the role with 6,776 votes against 3,882, cementing her influence in the ruling party.
Among’s decision to contest sets the stage for a significant political contest between two of the most prominent female leaders in Uganda.
However, former Speaker Kadaga is yet to announce whether she will be contesting in the forthcoming elections.
The contest for the 2nd National Vice Chairperson (Female) is expected to attract national attention, given the stature and achievements of both candidates. Among has positioned herself as a unifying leader committed to advancing the party’s agenda across Uganda.
Further details regarding the campaign are expected as the race for the influential party position heats up. (developing story)
