Six Dead, Five Severely Injured in Kampala-Gulu Road Accident

On September 4, 2024, four people died on the spot and six others were critically injured in a collision between a Toyota Hiace taxi and an unidentified truck early in the morning in Nakazzi village.

Six people have been confirmed dead, while five others are in a critical condition resulting from a head-on collision that occurred along the Kampala-Gulu highway in Luwero district.

The incident happened on Sinalya Hill in Nyimbwa sub-county, Luwero district, on October 15, 2024, after a Taxi Hiace drone registration number UBL 502Z and a Fuso Fighter lorry registration number UBN 052L collided, leaving six people dead on the spot and five others nursing critical injuries.

The deceased, all passengers in the taxi, have been identified as Charles Opirisa, a resident of Banda in Kampala city; Joshua Ebong; Ephraim Mugerwa, a resident of Kasubi-Kawala; Rogers Mfitumukiza, a resident of Kisoro district; Kato; and one lady was not unidentified.

Preliminary reports indicate that the accident resulted from the driver of the Fuso fighter truck who was coming from Kampala and heading to Gulu overtaking other vehicles and ended up colliding head-on with the taxi, which was coming from Gulu and was heading to Kampala.

In an interview with journalists on Wednesday, October 16, 2024, Sam Twiineamazima, the Savannah regional police spokesperson, confirmed the accident, attributing it to careless driving by the Fuso truck driver who was overspeeding and overtaking in the wrong lane of the road.

Twiineamazima added that the taxi driver was among the dead; however, the Fuso truck driver survived the accident and is currently on the run.

’’Investigations are underway; however, anyone with information on who was driving the Fuso fighter truck should inform police so as to aid the investigations,’’ Twiineamazima noted.

According to the police, the injured were taken to Bombo Military Hospital for better medical treatment, while the bodies of the deceased were taken to Luwero Hospital mortuary for post-mortem examinations.

Twiineamazima disclosed that the wreckages of the two vehicles were towed to Bombo Police Station as investigations are underway.

Additionally, Twiineamazima called upon all motorists to respect and adhere to traffic rules in order to prevent other tragedies.

The incidents along the Kampala-Gulu Highway reflect ongoing concerns regarding road safety on this highway, which has seen a significant number of accidents recently due to unsafe driving behaviors such as overspeeding and reckless overtaking as the major contributing factors to these tragic events.
