The Members of Parliament (MPs) from Serere district have commissioned the construction of a road that is costing over Ugx162 million. The commissioning of the construction of the 9.3-km Acilo-Adipala-Opungure road was conducted amidst ululations from the jubilant crowd of local residents on June 24, 2024. The road work is funded by the government of Uganda under the Road Fund, and it is worth Ugx 1 billion, which was sent to Serere district.

While officiating the commissioning, Emmanuel Okot, the Serere Resident District Commissioner, expressed the government’s commitment to improving the road network in the country.

“This is the fifth road we have commissioned. We should appreciate the government for this,” Okot said.

Emmanuel Omoding, the Member of Parliament representing Pingire county, pledged to lobby for more support from the government.

Elijah Okupa, the Kasilo county Member of Parliament, cautioned locals against misusing the road.

“Whatever we received as Serere is a result of our unity. We should protect our roads. Don’t drive livestock on the roads because they shorten the lifespan of the road,” Okupa noted.

He reiterated their commitment to look for more funds from the parliament and effectively appropriate them.

The government of Uganda released a budget worth Ugx 26 billion, with each district and municipality allocated worth Ugx 1 billion for the maintenance of roads in the 2023/2024 Financial Year, outside the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) jurisdiction.

The development was revealed in the report of the Physical Infrastructure Committee on the policy statement of the Ministry of Works and Transport for the 2023/2024 Financial Year. The money was largely focused on maintenance, as directed by President Museveni.

The story is written by Emmanuel Opio, the Kapelebyong District Communications Officer.
