Former Uganda Cranes goalkeeper and captain, Denis Onyango, has volunteered to assist the Uganda CHAN squad’s goalkeeping department during his holiday in the country, following a request from the Federation of Uganda Football Association (FUFA).

In a statement released on their official X account on Monday, July 7, 2025, FUFA confirmed the arrangement, with Onyango set to join the team at Luzira Prison Ground for a training session today.

“Former Uganda Cranes goalkeeper and Captain Denis Onyango has graciously offered to support the CHAN squad’s goalkeeping department during his holiday in the country, after being approached by FUFA,” the post read.

The 40-year-old Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper’s mentorship will be a significant boost for the CHAN team, which is made up entirely of domestic-based players from the Uganda Premier League.

Onyango’s wealth of experience is expected to help improve the skills of the team’s goalkeepers as they prepare for the 2024 African Nations Championship, which Uganda will co-host with Kenya and Tanzania from August 2 to 30, 2025.

The CHAN goalkeepers include Joel Mutakubwa (BUL FC), Hannington Ssebwalunyo (NEC FC), Crispas Kusiima (Kitara FC), Mutwalibu Mugolofa (KCCA FC), and Denis Kiggundu (Vipers SC).

FUFA’s initiative reflects its ongoing commitment to developing talent by engaging former players, fostering a culture of mentorship, and strengthening the national team’s technical capacity.
