The Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF), led by Frank Tumwebaze, has convened district leaders from across Uganda for a two-day consultative meeting to develop interventions to address the effects of harsh weather and drought on farming communities.
The meeting, taking place from October 7th–8th, 2026, at Imperial Royale Hotel in Kampala, brings together elected and technical leaders from all 146 districts and cities to discuss challenges affecting agricultural production.
The consultations are focusing on irrigation, mechanisation, boosting agricultural production, and improving market access.
Tumwebaze said the engagement will help profile each district based on its water coverage, terrain, and priority agricultural enterprises to inform a mass irrigation intervention tailored to local needs.
“The farmer who wakes up every morning to cultivate, to rear animals or engage in fisheries must see a presence and benefit of government in his or her economic activities,” Tumwebaze said.
Tumwebaze also urged leaders to remain focused on service delivery and performance, citing President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni’s call for increased commitment to national development.
“H.E. President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni told us, this is ‘Kisanja Hakuna Kulala’, so wake up and wake those slumbering on the job near you. Let us challenge one another where we see complacency. Let us not allow ourselves to settle into comfort or preserve friendships at the expense of performance and progress,” Tumwebaze noted.
The consultations are expected to provide the Ministry with district-specific information to guide the design and implementation of irrigation and other agricultural interventions aimed at protecting farmers and strengthening food production amid changing weather conditions.
