NRM Distances Self from Kampala Hooligans in Party Shirts

“It is regrettable that some people are using NRM t-shirts to commit crimes. These are not genuine NRM supporters,” Todwong said.

The National Resistance Movement (NRM) has publicly distanced itself from a group of criminals who allegedly disguised themselves as party supporters and robbed civilians during the nomination day events for President Yoweri Museveni.

According to reports, several people heading to the NRM headquarters on Kyadondo Road were attacked and robbed near key city landmarks such as the National Theatre and UBC roundabout.

Victims, including pedestrians and motorists, were stripped of mobile phones, wallets, cash, and other valuables in broad daylight.

Videos of the incidents went viral on social media, showing some of the perpetrators wearing NRM-branded t-shirts while engaging in violent robberies.

NRM Secretary General, Richard Todwong during the Father’s Union Day celebration in Omoro District strongly condemned the incident saying that the party had nothing to do with the rogue individuals, describing them as infiltrators with criminal intent.

“It is regrettable that some people are using NRM t-shirts to commit crimes. These are not genuine NRM supporters,” Todwong said.

“The NRM bazukulu and youth wing do not behave in such a manner. Their conduct is similar to that of some opposition groups,” he added.

The Uganda Police Force has confirmed the arrest of 21 suspects, including two women, in connection with the robbery incidents. The suspects are currently detained at Central Police Station (CPS) and Wandegeya Police Station as investigations continue.

Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Patrick Onyango stated that the arrests were aided by footage from street surveillance cameras and mobile phone recordings shared online by eyewitnesses.

Authorities have assured the public that security agencies are on high alert to prevent similar incidents.

“We urge all Ugandans to desist from election violence or criminality of any form. We will ensure that anyone who disrupts public order is brought to justice,” Onyango said.

The NRM has reiterated its commitment to peaceful political engagement and warned its supporters to remain vigilant and law-abiding throughout the campaign period.
