MITYANA: Newborn Baby Abandoned in Nursery Bed, Police Launch Manhunt for Mother

SP Rachael Kawala, the Wamala region police spokesperson

Police in Mityana are on a manhunt for a mother who dumped her newborn baby in a tree nursery bed.

This incident happened in the morning of August 5, 2024, in Kiwawu village in Malangala Sub County, Mityana District.

According to preliminary investigations, the infant might be a day old or a week old because it still had a fresh umbilical cord stump, which implies that it was dumped in its weaning stage.

During an interview with journalists on August 6, 2024, Wamala region police spokesperson Rachael Kawala revealed that police were informed about the occurrence in the morning, and currently the infant is being kept at the Child Protection Unit at the police until the culprit who dumped the baby is caught.

Kawala added that the infant was found wrapped up in bed sheets in a tree nursery bed and turned upside down, which shows that the mother wanted it to die of suffocation.

’’The baby is safe and sound at the police child protection unit until we find its mother. However, what she did was wrong because it is a very crucial stage where the new-born baby needs a mother’s touch, love, and care, but once investigations are done, we shall know the culprit,’’ Kawala noted.

Kawala called upon anyone who has information on the baby’s mother or if there is anyone they know in the community who was pregnant but did not come back with the baby to inform the police immediately.
