Liverpool tightened their grip on the Premier League title race with a 2-0 victory over Newcastle United at Anfield on Wednesday, stretching their lead at the top to 13 points.
Goals from Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister secured the win for Arne Slot’s side, who have now gone 24 league matches unbeaten (W17 D7). The Reds capitalized on Arsenal’s 0-0 draw with Nottingham Forest, widening the gap between the two teams in the title race.
Liverpool manager Arne Slot praised his team’s performance but admitted there were areas for improvement.
“I did like what I saw, but there are areas where we can improve. Perhaps it was a lack of concentration, especially considering it was our fifth game in 15 days, and I noticed a few moments where we struggled with the ball. That’s unusual for this team. However, I thought we performed really well after that, not just the starters, but also the players who came on,” he said.
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe, meanwhile, lamented his team’s defensive lapses.
“We played OK tonight, decent performance. But we conceded two soft goals, and that made the difference,” he noted.
Liverpool’s dominance at Anfield continues, with Newcastle’s last away win at the stadium dating back to 1995.
Elsewhere, Manchester City climbed back into fourth place with a 1-0 win over Tottenham, courtesy of Erling Haaland’s 20th goal of the season.
Manchester United also secured a thrilling 3-2 victory over Ipswich at Old Trafford.
Liverpool now turn their focus to the Champions League, where they will face Paris Saint-Germain away in the Round of 16 before returning to Premier League action against Southampton at Anfield on March 8.
