The rehabilitation works on the Nabilatuk-Lorengecora road, linking Napak and Nabilatuk districts in Karamoja sub-region, have commenced after receiving approximately Ugx 1Bn grant that was set aside by the government for road maintenance in the district.

Sylvia Awas, the Woman Member of Parliament of Nabilatuk district, said during the launch on April 5, 2024, that the rehabilitation works are a boost to the infrastructure development of the district.

“We are here to launch the road between Nabilatuk and Lorengecora that is in Napak district, and this road is to connect business between Nabilatuk and Napak districts, and it will also bring peace between us in Napak. We want to thank the government for giving us one billion shillings. This is one of the roads that we have located as a road committee,” Awas noted.

Elijah Liko, the Nabilatuk district engineer who was also present at the launch, revealed that the rehabilitation works on the 24.2-kilometer road will cost around Ugx 450m.

He asked the locals to allow the creation of offshoots on their land to enable water flow and avoid water clogging after road works have been completed.

Liko cautioned the community against dragging ox-ploughs on the road, which could affect the state of the roads.

While addressing locals, the District Chairperson, Paul Lokol, commended the central government for the funds allocated and the district council for prioritizing the Nabilatuk-Lorengecora road, saying that it will ease connectivity to Napak.

The Nabilatuk Deputy CAO, John Longoli, asked the locals to monitor the progress of work and report any theft of fuel to authorities.

He noted that improvement of the road infrastructure will ease access to social services, including health, education, and market access, and called for cooperation. He, however, reechoed the need to avoid dragging ox-ploughs on the road.

Nabilatuk district received worth Ugx 1Bn from the central government under the rehabilitation grant that was allocated to all districts. The district planned the rehabilitation of the Nabilatuk-Lorengecora road, which cost approximately Ugx 450M and the Nabilatuk-Amuda-Lorengedwat road, which cost around Ugx 400M while the remaining balance is meant to aid operations.

However, rehabilitation works on the Nabilatuk-Amuda-Lorengedwat road, approximately 32.8 km, commenced on February 3, 2024, and the district authorities said that it would take a period of three months.
