The Democratic Party Women’s League president, Sarah Adong has called upon women in the democratic party to embrace leadership roles and offer themselves for different leadership positions ahead of party’s delegates conference.

Adong, who was speaking during the party’s weekly media briefing on May 13, 2025, expressed optimism about the increasing participation of women in the party’s leadership.

According to Adong, more than 56 women have already expressed interest in vying for top positions in the party, and approximately 30 percent of delegates at the upcoming Mbarara conference will be women.

“As we go to Mbarara for delegates conference we shall have like 30 percent contesting for different positions,” Adong said.

She asked party members to give women and youth opportunities to contest for different positions inorder to create a conducive and healthy competitive environment.

“The women league and youth league are important for the existence of a political party and as you are giving media space to the men also please cover the women in DP and hear what solutions they have and please give young people and women space because they are the epitome of politics of the country,” Adong added.

The Democratic party election management committee chairperson Kennedy Mutenyo urged party leaders at different levels to conclude elections in their different districts and submit the names of delegates to the secretariat in time.

“We are expecting over 1600 delegates for the delegates conference and the moment we have quorum we shall vote even without results from other areas,” Mutenyo said.

The democratic party just like other political parties is yet to have a delegate’s conference which will determine party leadership as we head into the 2026 general election.

DP joins, FDC, NRM and UPC to organize internal party elections as they prepare to choose presidential flag bearers and also renew contracts of serving leaders as some are voted out and others take on the leadership mantle.
