Busoga Kingdom Organizes Kagulu Rock Climbing Challenge 2023

Busoga Kingdom has organized a rock climbing challenge at the historic Kagulu cultural site. The rock located in Buyende District, is said to be where the first Musoga Namutukula settled after crossing from Bunyoro Kingdom. Every year the Kingdom organizes a rock climbing challenge in August as part of efforts to recognize the significance of the rock under the theme “Creating job opportunities through digital tourism.

According to the Busoga Ministry of Tourism and Heritage, the event scheduled for August 26, 2023, will be officiated by the Kyabazinga William Wilberforce Gabula Nadiope the 4th, as the chief climber.

Kagulu rock stands at 3,600 feet above sea level and is one of the historical sites in Busoga.

During a press release issued on Wednesday, August 9, 2023, the Minister of Tourism and Heritage-Busoga, Hellen Namutamba revealed that several activities will take place at the site, among which is the health Camp and Miss Tourism Competition.

“We shall have several activities at the site. On the 24th, we shall begin with the cultural exhibitions that will take place for the entire three days. We shall have the health camp. We shall have a Miss Tourism competition in the evening of 25th. And then we shall have the Mr. and Mrs. TikTok finals on the 25th of August, and they will be unveiled to the King on the 26th after climbing the rock,” Namutamba noted.

According to Namutamba, this year’s rock climbing is also expected to be spearheaded by youths and local artists, among others, adding that the event will be youth-based, and involving social media.

“Everyone pushing is a youth.  We want our children to use the tourism sites that will have to become their employment and job opportunity. We want them to use these sites so that they can organize tour travels and they get their funds,” she added.

The Youth in Busoga and others from all over the country will be expected to participate as a means of bringing in Money. The Kyabazinga of Busoga William Wilberforce Gabula Nadiope was hosted by President Museveni on Wednesday evening, August 9’ 2023, where they discussed a lot of issues including tourism and socio-economic transformation initiatives.

The last Kagulu rock climbing challenge took place on August 20, 2022, and was graced by the former Speaker of Parliament, Rebecca Kadaga who is currently the First Deputy Prime Minister of Uganda and Minister for East African Community Affairs in the Cabinet of Uganda.
