The Kilak North Member of Parliament, Anthony Akol has described Uganda’s Local Council I (LCI) elections as the country’s most transparent electoral process, as the Electoral Commission (EC) intensifies preparations for the nationwide polls scheduled for July 28th, 2026.
Speaking during a televised interview on July 6th, 2026, Akol said LCI elections allow communities to elect leaders based on their personal knowledge of the candidates, making the process more transparent and accountable.
“The most transparent elections are the LCI elections. People vote based on what they know about you,” Akol said.
Meanwhile, EC has urged all eligible Ugandans aged 18 years and above who ordinarily reside in their respective villages to participate in the elections, noting that voter registration is already underway across the country. The Commission also said eligible citizens may contest for LCI and LCII Chairperson positions either as independent candidates or under the sponsorship of political parties.
According to the EC, Local Council I Chairpersons play a vital role in maintaining community security, coordinating local service delivery, overseeing the implementation of government programmes, resolving disputes at the village level and promoting accountability in local governance.
The Commission emphasized that every vote cast in the LCI elections contributes to building stronger and more responsive communities by empowering citizens to elect leaders who understand and represent local interests.
