Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) Party spokesperson Arach Sharon has confirmed that the UPC party President Jimmy Akena will be contesting for the presidency of Uganda come 2026.
Arach confirmed this to a Nexus reporter during their weekly press conference at Uganda House in Kampala on September 4, 2024.
“Yes, as a party spokesperson, I can confirm that come 2026 our party President Jimmy Akena will contest for the presidency, and in a few days to come we shall release a road map and the dates for different party activities,” Arach said.
Faizo Muzeyi, the head of media communications at UPC, also reechoed Akena’s presence on the 2026 presidential ballot paper and asked for support in the coming election.
“UPC will have Jimmy Akena contest for the presidency, and as UPC we shall have candidates in all political positions. We ask for your mandate and support in the coming elections,“ Muzeyi said.
Muzeyi further asked all political actors to remain peaceful and calm as we head into the 2026 general elections.
“As we come closer to 2026 general elections, UPC reiterates its position that all stakeholders (Electoral Commission, Security Agencies, Civil Society, Political Parties, Politicians, and the public) ensure peace and safety of our people before, during, and after elections,” Muzeyi added.
Akena, the son of the two-time Ugandan President, late Apollo Milton Obote, will be contesting for the biggest office in Uganda for the first time since he became UPC party president.
