Uganda’s Samuel Simba Cherop Completes Islamic Games Double with 5000m Bronze

The 20-year-old had already stunned observers two days earlier when he sprinted to silver in the 10,000m in 29:06.58, finishing just behind Morocco’s Abdalaati Iguider and ahead of teammate Abel Chebet, who took bronze.

Uganda’s rising distance-running sensation, Samuel Simba Cherop secured a bronze medal in the men’s 5000m final on Thursday evening, clocking a personal best of 13:46.45 at the Prince Faisal bin Fahd Olympic Complex to cap a memorable debut at the 6th Islamic Solidarity Games.

The 20-year-old had already stunned observers two days earlier when he sprinted to silver in the 10,000m in 29:06.58, finishing just behind Morocco’s Abdalaati Iguider and ahead of teammate Abel Chebet, who took bronze.

Simba’s bronze on Thursday came in a tactical race dominated by East African and Middle Eastern athletes, with the Ugandan unleashing his trademark late surge to edge out several more experienced rivals in the final 200 meters.

“Two medals in my first senior international championship, I thank God, my coaches, and everyone back home who believed in me,” Simba said after the medal ceremony.

The double-medal performance marks the latest breakthrough for a athlete widely regarded as one of Uganda’s brightest prospects for the 2028 Olympic cycle.

Uganda Athletics Federation President Dominic Otuchet praised Simba’s breakout performance

“Samuel is proof our athlete development pathway is bearing fruit. To watch a 20-year-old handle the pressure of two championship finals in three days and claim two medals is simply outstanding. His grit, determination, and talent hint at a promising future on the world stage,” he stated.

With Simba’s medals, Uganda’s athletics team has now claimed at least five podium finishes in Riyadh, contributing significantly to the country’s growing tally at the Games.

As the Islamic Solidarity Games draw to a close on November 21, Cherop Samuel Simba returns home not only with hardware around his neck, but with the growing expectation that he could soon follow in the footsteps of Ugandan distance legends Joshua Cheptegei and Jacob Kiplimo on the global stage.
