The Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety has warned all motorists to observe the rules of the road and exercise maximum discipline and patience to enable students and other pedestrians to cross.
While addressing the media during the weekly security brief, on September 18, 2023, Michael Kananura, the Spokesperson of Traffic Police reminded all parents, students, motorists and all road users of all the road safety tips.
Kananura urged the public to use roads as if every child on the road is theirs.
“All children below the age of 12 must be accompanied by elders on motorcycles, and motor cycles that carry more than two children are strongly warned by the traffic Police because it has been seen as a habit when schools open. You find motorcycles carrying three or even four children,” Kananura said.
“The Police calls upon all parents, guardians or caretakers of these children to be responsible for the safety of these children as they travel to and from schools,” Kananura added.
He said that all children transported on motor cycles are required to put on crush helmets and that children need not to be left alone while using roads.
He requested parents, guardians, caretakers and teachers to accompany children especially on busy roads.
“Drivers are strongly warned against carrying excess and interference to safe driving as this contravenes with the traffic laws and regulations,” he said.
Kananura advised students to also take taxis and motorcycles from recognized stages, not to board a tinted vehicle or strange vehicles and take note of the registration numbers of the taxi or boda boda before boarding.
He reminded parents to ensure that their children know their contacts and the emergency contacts of police.
