The Muslim fraternity is mourning the passing of Hajjat Sarah Kakungulu, a mother to Prince Kassim Kakungulu Nakibinge.
The late Hajjat Sarah was a widow to the late Prince Dr Badru Kakungulu, a respected elder woman celebrated for her important role in improving education and family life in the Muslim community.
She passed away on the morning of December 30, 2024, at the International Hospital Kampala.
Reports show that the 79-year-old had been struggling with a kidney disease alongside other health issues including back problems and leg pain for a long time.
Many have reflected on her enduring legacy, including Dr. Muhammad Kiggundu Musoke, the Public Relations Director of the Kibuli Muslim Leadership, who described her as “a cornerstone of strength within the Muslim community, renowned for her unwavering dedication to nurturing and educating Muslim families.”
Kiguddu said that, Hajjat Sarah was deeply involved in supporting Muslim education institutions, offering guidance and resources that enhanced learning and unity among the schools and surrounding communities.
He commended the late Hajjat Sarah for a legacy of devotion and service, having played a critical role in fostering unity and growth within the Muslim community.
Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago also paid tribute to her contributions.
“She has been educating Muslims and the schools around them,” Lukwago said.
According to Lukwago, Hajjat Sarah had been a strong pillar and a guiding force in the education sector.
He added that Hajjati Sarah’s life of service was a reflection of her dedication to nurturing the next generation of Muslim leaders and strengthening the community’s moral and educational fabric.
Kira Municipality Member of Parliament, Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda emphasized Hajjat Sarah’s modesty, noting that despite her prominent background, she never sought attention.
He contrasted her humility with the tendency of some individuals seeking recognition for their status, highlighting her quiet strength and dedication to her community
Butambala MP Muwanga Muhammad Kivumbi, noted that Hajjat Sarah maintained a low profile, never engaging with social media or the press since her husband’s passing.
He highlighted her calm and private demeanor, stating that she embodied the essence of goodness in humanity
The Minister of Agriculture in the Buganda government, Haji Hamis Kakomo, , remarked that Buganda has lost a figure of significant influence, stating that she has been a nurturing parent to all since her husband’s passing.
She will be laid to rest at his ancestor ground today, Tuesday December 31, 2024, in Namasumbi, Mukono District.
