Thailand: Police Arrest Woman for Allegedly Seducing and Blackmailing Senior Monks in $12M Temple Scandal

Authorities allege she targeted high-ranking monks, engaged in intimate relationships with them, and later coerced them into transferring large sums of temple funds under threat of exposure.

Police in Thailand have arrested a woman accused of seducing and blackmailing senior Buddhist monks in a scandal that has rocked the country’s religious institutions and exposed major financial misconduct within temples.

Wilawan Emsawat, in her 30s, was detained Tuesday, July 15, 2025 in Nonthaburi province on charges of extortion, money laundering, and receiving stolen goods.

Authorities allege she targeted high-ranking monks, engaged in intimate relationships with them, and later coerced them into transferring large sums of temple funds under threat of exposure.

At least nine monks, including prominent abbots, have been defrocked amid the ongoing probe.

Police say one monk paid Wilawan 7.2 million baht ($222,000) after she falsely claimed to be pregnant.

Investigators traced over 385 million baht ($11.9 million) through her accounts over the past three years, much of it reportedly spent on online gambling.

Digital evidence seized from Wilawan includes tens of thousands of explicit images, videos, and chat logs. Officials warn the material was used to extort multiple monks across the country.

The case has prompted Thailand’s acting prime minister to call for urgent reforms in temple financial oversight.

“This woman is dangerous. But this is about more than one person. This is about restoring faith in our religious institutions,” Central Investigation Bureau deputy commissioner Jaroonkiat Pankaew said.

Authorities have also launched a nationwide investigation and set up a public hotline to report monk misconduct.
