Juvenal Marizamunda, the Minister of Defence of the Republic of Rwanda, has commended the partner states and the participants for demonstrating unity and dedication as they collaboratively addressed complex and multidimensional security challenges.

Marizamunda made the remarks during the closure of the 13th Edition of the East African Community’s (EAC) Armed Forces Field Training Exercise, codenamed ‘Ushirikiano Imara,’ which was officially concluded at the Rwanda Defence Force Military Academy in Gako on June 21, 2024.

“Through collaboration and support from the EAC, we can address the 21st-century security challenges that have proven to be exceptionally complex,” Marizamunda said.

He urged member states, the EAC Secretariat, and the participants to evaluate the accomplishments of the exercise and share what they had learned.

According to Veronica Mueni Nduva, the Secretary General of the East African Community, the exercise aimed to enhance the partner states’ capabilities in defending the community’s shared interests.

Gen Mubarakh Muganga, the Chief of Defence Staff of the Rwanda Defence Force, praised sister forces from member states for their commitment and stated that the exercise fostered a strong bond among the participating states.

“Laying a solid foundation for the community to develop homegrown solutions to local problems is the way forward,” Gen Muganga said.

During the inspection of the Uganda contingent, Lt Gen Sam Okiding, the Deputy Chief of Defence Forces, lauded the contingent for demonstrating discipline and professionalism throughout the exercise.

“I commend you for representing Uganda well and upholding the integrity of the UPDF,” Lt Gen Okiding said.

Officials and dignitaries from EAC Member States attended the function and emphasized the importance of regional cooperation in addressing security challenges in the East African region.

The exercise was conducted under the theme Strengthening Security Sector Integration and Harnessing Common Interests Consistent with EAC Regional Peace and Security.
