Police in Wobulenzi town council are hunting for an unidentified assailant who beheaded a 50-year-old woman reportedly over land wrangles in Luwero district.

This incident happened in Wampamba zone, Wobulenzi town council in Luwero district, on September 18, 2024, at around 8:00 pm.

The deceased, identified as Margaret Nakiyingi, was attacked and her head hacked with a machete, leaving it slightly hanging on her body at the entrance of her rental house.

During an interview with journalists on September 19, 2024, Betty Naiga, the Wobulenzi West parish councilor in Wobulenzi town council, revealed that Nakiyingi was found by a boy from the neighborhood who was coming from a local shop and found her lying in cold blood.

Naiga added that this is not the first time the victim was being attacked and that it might have been done by family members due to the land wrangles amongst them.

’’The crime scene was so horrific and gruesome and so nauseating to look at due to the way she was killed,’’ Naiga disclosed.

Sam Twiinamazima, the Savannah Regional Police Spokesperson, revealed that police promptly acted when they were informed about this incident; however, when the sniffer dogs were brought to the crime scene, they could not get the culprits because the crime scene was already tampered with by the locals.

Twiinamazima added that the culprit escaped; however, since investigations are ongoing, they will be caught and taken to court.

“We call upon anyone with information on this case to come forward so as to aid in police investigations and get justice for Nakiyingi,’’ Twiinamazima noted.

The deceased’s body was taken to Luwero Hospital for a postmortem examination to also aid in police investigations.

The murder incident illustrates the severe consequences of land conflicts in Uganda, leading to loss of life and community distress, and the tensions that have been arising within families over land ownership. For instance, in April 2024, a 38-year-old man identified as Richard Onapa was accused of killing his stepbrother Jasper Ekwaro, aged 24 years, during a dispute over six acres of family land in Acinanga Village, Apac district.
