Police Apprehend Murder Fugitive in Kyankwanzi District

Twaha Francis, the Greater Masaka Police Spokesperson

Police in Kyankwanzi district have arrested a 45-year-old man who has been on the run after killing his business partner in Masaka district.

The suspect has been identified as Charles Kato, a resident of Bwami village in Bukakata Sub County in Masaka district, while the deceased was identified as Francis Mugumya, a 42-year-old resident of Bwami village in Makonzi parish.

Kato relocated to Kyankwanzi district after he killed Mugumya in Masaka district in 2023, and to avoid police investigations, he disappeared.

During an interview on June 5, 2024, Twaha Francis, the Greater Masaka Police Spokesperson, said that Kato was arrested after the residents were led by Mutaasa, a resident from Bukakata in Masaka district, who identified him, captured him, and took him to police in Kyankwanzi.

’’Kato killed Mugumya and buried him in a shallow grave near where they were burning charcoal. He grew crops on top of the grave so as to kill evidence, but unfortunately, he did not succeed,’’ Twaha revealed.

He added that once investigations were carried out, Mugumya’s body was found, and Kato ran away to Kyankwanzi district.

Twaha thanked the locals for cooperating with the police and urged them to continue with the spirit of patriotism portrayed during the capture of Kato.

Kato is currently being held at the police station in Masaka district.
