The leadership of the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) party is under pressure to forge ways of redeeming its Executive chairperson, Erias Lukwago, who was allegedly whisked away on Monday morning, June 15th, 2026, to an unknown destination.
According to Lulume Bayiga, the deputy party president in charge of Buganda, Lukwago’s whereabouts remain unknown despite the party leadership’s efforts to consult the police to gain access to him.
“We don’t know where exactly Lukwago is because his legal firm, led by Medad Ssegonna, tried to go to the Natete police station to report the case, but it refused. They proceeded to the CID offices, and the same thing happened. However, they decided to write to the CID headquarters about Lukwago’s arrest and his incommunicado detention,” Lulume said.
While addressing the journalists on Tuesday, June 16th, 2026, at the PFF party headquarters on Katonga Road in Kampala, Lulume noted that the party leadership is set to write to different political formations, religious institutions, and civil societies to interest themselves in condemning the gross violation of the law by those vested with authority.
“We are going to communicate to everyone with any kind of power, whether it’s social, religious, or economic, because this is not only about Lukwago, the leader of this party, but it’s about us and our constitution, which is being violated, and we must raise our voices to make sure everybody is up to defend the constitution,” he noted.
He, however, commended the Uganda Law Society and a group of defense lawyers who have openly condemned the violation of human rights and demanded Lukwago’s immediate release.
“We are thankful to the Uganda Law Society, which came out and gave an ultimatum concerning the release of Lukwago because this is a direct attack on their docket. The manner in which he was arrested and the way he is being treated indicate the way in which any other person can be treated,” Lulume said.
In their continued efforts to demand justice for Dr. Kizza Besigye and his co-lead defense counsel, Lukwago, the Defense lawyers led by Martha Karua have written a joint letter informing Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the Chief of Defence Forces, of their relentless efforts in pursuing justice for the duo.
Lukwago has been serving as the co-lead defence counsel alongside Kenyan human rights advocate Martha Karua in the high-profile treason case involving veteran opposition leader Besigye.
The case stems from allegations that Dr. Besigye, Hajj Obeid Lutale Kamulegeya, and Captain Denis Oola plotted to overthrow the Ugandan government by force of arms.
