PART 1: Road Signs found on Ugandan Roads

Uganda has a number of traffic signs planted along road sides to help reduce on the risks of accidents through warnings and guiding. Today I will take you through some of the common road signs on the road.

This piece of writing brings you the top 15 traffic road signs you are advised to obey while driving, according to the High-Way Code of Uganda.

Zebra or the pedestrian crossing sign; this is the most common and abused road sign by the motorists in Uganda. It has got white stripes on the road, which shows that the pedestrians will be crossing at that area of the road and therefore, the motorists should always slow down and stop for pedestrians to cross.

Stop sign; the octagonal post with the word stop notifies the driver that they have to stop. Stop signs are commonly found at junctions of main roads. As you get close to this sign, you are advised to stop and slowly assess the situation, making sure that there is no other car coming from the opposite side of the road.

Traffic lights; designed in three distinct colors; red, amber and green, the lights have varying instructions which have to be followed. The red light asks the driver to stop, amber is a warning that you should get ready to move or stop, while the green light allows you to continue with the drive.

The Roundabout sign; this sign shows with arrows in a circle or arrows pointing to the different directions the roundabout will lead one to. The warning sign prevents motorists from running into each other.

The speed limit sign; this sign has got legal maximum speed at which one should drive in a particular area. These signs show speed in kilometers per hour. The speed limit road sign helps in preventing accidents since it helps the motorists to know at what speed they should drive at in the given area.

Humps ahead; this sign shows the motorists to reduce their speed. It’s put 50 meters before one reaches the hump.
The One way sign; The one way road sign has an arrow that points in the direction in which motorists should be driving.
Yield sign; Also known as “give way sign”, it is designed to instruct a driver to slow down or stop where possible so as to create way for the other vehicle.

No parking; the traffic road sign limits drivers from parking in specific areas. You can only park and leave shortly in less than 2 minutes if you are picking or dropping off a passenger.

No U-turn; the sign is indicated with a curved arrow and a bright symbol cutting across it to show that the act is prohibited. The driver must not change the car to the opposite

No entry sign is also vital because if you drive in the no entry zone, they are most likely to be towed or clamped.
These are some of the common signs found on the roads of Uganda.
