NUP Campaigns for Incarcerated Mufumbiro,  Rallies Support from Nakawa East Party Supporters

“We did our best to register Mufumbiro while away because we know that you love him. His only crime was being your voice. Support him to represent you in parliament,” Rubongoya said.

The leaders of the National Unity Platform (NUP), led by Joel Ssenyonyi, the Leader of Opposition in Parliament, have appealed to the party supporters in Nakawa East to vote for the party flag bearer for Nakawa East, Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro, who is being held in prison for charges related to inciting violence and unlawful drilling.

The appeal was made during the Campaign launch for Mufumbiro held on November 13, 2025, at Mbuya 1 playgrounds in Nakawa East Constituency.

While speaking to party supporters, Ssenyonyi accused the security of arresting Mufumbiro for eloquently exposing the weakness of those in power, such as corruption, political persecution, and misuse of the taxpayers’ money, among others.

“They arrested Mufumbiro for speaking the truth concerning their bad acts, like corruption. But I appeal to you to not only vote for him but also look for votes. This will shame those who thought they would hinder him from campaigning to become your leader,” Ssenyonyi said.

In his recorded speech to the party supporters, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, the NUP party President, appealed to his supporters to vote for Mufumbiro, stating that they should look at Mufumbiro as Nkuruma, the former President of Ghana, who was overwhelmingly supported while in prison.

“Mufumbiro was arrested because he had been articulate when speaking against Museveni and his sycophants, just like other freedom fighters such as Dr.Besigye and others. I appeal to you to support Mufubiro and all those with an umbrella. Let us do like the people of Ghana who voted for Nkuruma while in prison,” Kyagulanyi said.

While addressing the party supporters, David Lewis Rubongoya, the party Secretary General, stated that the People of Nakawa East should vote for Mufumbiro to prove their love for the umbrella.

“We did our best to register Mufumbiro while away because we know that you love him. His only crime was being your voice. Support him to represent you in parliament,” Rubongoya said.

According to Ssenyonyi, Nakawa Magistrate’s Court denied Mufumbiro bail regarding the case of incitement to commit an offence, adding that he also faces another charge of unlawful drilling at the Kawempe Magistrate’s Court in Kanyanya.

So far, five candidates have been cleared by the Electoral Commission to contest for the Nakawa East seat. They include Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro (NUP), Fred Ruhindi (NRM), Moses Mugisha Okwera (FDC), and independents Charles Keeno, Winfred Nakandi, and Joy Kirabo.

Meanwhile, in Makindye East, popular media personality Robert Ssekidde, better known as Tuff B, has also been nominated as an independent candidate. He will face off against Ali Nganda Mulyanyama, the NUP flag bearer and incumbent mayor of Makindye Division, among others.
