Museveni Cautions Lango NRM MPs Against Divisive Politics After Victory

“When we came into power, our objective was clear to unite Ugandans. We do not believe in divisions. We believe in working for all,” the President stated.

President Museveni meets Political leaders from Lango - sub region at State House.

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has called on outgoing and incoming Members of Parliament from the Lango Sub-region to safeguard unity and discipline within the National Resistance Movement (NRM).

Speaking during a meeting at State House, Entebbe on February 18th, 2026, the President congratulated the legislators on what he called the party’s best election results in the region since 1996, but said that keeping unity within the Movement should now be the top priority.

“I am happy to meet you and congratulate you for the good work in Lango and Northern Uganda in general,” President Museveni said.

“But we must guard against mistakes of the past, unity is our strength,” he added.

Reflecting on Uganda’s political line, the President quoted the former leaders such as Milton Obote, Edward Mutesa II and John Kakonge, noting that sectarian divisions rooted in tribalism and religion undermined national cohesion.

“The country was in their hands, but because they went into tribalism and religion, they lost it,” he said.

He questioned why some leaders prioritise identity politics over issues that affect all citizens equally, arguing that the NRM’s founding mission was to unite Ugandans and eliminate sectarianism.

“When we came into power, our objective was clear to unite Ugandans. We do not believe in divisions. We believe in working for all,” the President stated.

Quoting biblical scripture, the President reinforced his message of reconciliation and inclusiveness: “Blessed are the peacemakers, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.”

President Museveni urged the legislators to maintain discipline within party ranks and work collectively to strengthen the Movement’s structures at all levels.

“You must protect the unity of the NRM and the wider community. Victory should not create contentment; it should strengthen responsibility,” he said.

Hon. Denis Hamson Obua, who also serves as the NRM Vice Chairperson for Northern Uganda, on behalf of legislators expressed gratitude to the President for convening the meeting and reaffirmed their commitment to party cohesion.

“You have fulfilled your role as party leader, it is now upon us as leaders at all levels to emulate your example, especially in promoting unity and discipline within the Movement,” Obua said.

He further emphasised the need to intensify the fight against corruption and ensure effective implementation of government programmes to sustain public confidence.

The meeting, which brought together outgoing and incoming MPs, was seen as a strategic effort to ensure continuity and stability within the party’s parliamentary caucus ahead of the new term.

The legislators acknowledged the NRM government’s development footprint in the Lango Sub-region, citing progress in infrastructure and social services, and pledged to consolidate the gains.
