Lukwago Tasks IGG to Avail the Long Overdue Report on Kiteezi Landfill Tragedy

Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago

Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago has called upon the Office of the Inspectorate of Government (IGG) to expedite the process of releasing the long-awaited report regarding the Kiteezi Landfill tragedy.

He made these remarks on September 18, 2024, while addressing the media on waste management at Kampala City Hall.

According to Lukwago, the Inspectorate of Government swung into action to investigate the catastrophe and bring to book those culpable, but up to now no report has been presented.

“We are asking the IGG and, by extension of parliament, that if they are really touched by this matter and care for Ugandans, their heads must roll in the Kiteezi Landfill tragic incident that claimed over 50 lives,” Lukwago stated.

Lukwago highlighted that previous reports from the IGG have consistently ranked KCCA as one of the most corrupt local government authorities in Uganda, insisting that this culture of corruption must be addressed to prevent future incidents.

He also called for the suspension of specific officials within KCCA who are implicated in the negligence that led to the Kiteezi tragedy, emphasizing that accountability is crucial.

These actions by Lukwago reflect a broader demand for systemic change within KCCA to address corruption and improve waste management practices, ensuring that such tragedies do not occur again in the future.
