The High Court of Civil Division at Twed Towers in Kampala has set a date for the hearing of the petition filed by the National Unity Platform (NUP) party on the production of eighteen NUP supporters who were allegedly arrested prior to and after the 2021 general elections.
The court has set April 18, 2024, as the date for hearing the petition and has ordered all witnesses and both parties to be present by 11:00 a.m. at Twed Towers Civil Division Court.
While speaking to the media on January 30, 2024, the party Secretary General, Lewis Rubongoya, said that as a party, they will not relent until the truth is found and all is set, adding that all the required documents have been submitted to court.
“We’ve also included affidavits by people who saw them being arrested. Some of them were arrested with other people and released, and their colleagues who they were arrested with are still missing,” Rubongoya said.
“So what we’re trying to do here is bring yet another case. As you know, we went to the Uganda Human Rights Commission; there was no justice; we went to Parliament; and you remember that there was a huge debate about these missing persons. Whereas the regime admitted that many of these people are in the database, it has not acted to tell us where these people went,” Rubongoya added.
Rubongoya was also joined by the Leader of Opposition in Parliament (LOP), Joel Ssenyonyi, and Lina Zedriga, the party Deputy President for Northern Uganda. Also at court were different family members of the alleged missing persons and other party supporters who came to stand in solidarity.
