The Government of Uganda has handed over vehicles to gazetted cultural leaders in a bid to strengthen their role in mobilizing communities for peace, unity, and socio-economic transformation.
The handover ceremony, officiated by Vice President Jessica Alupo at Kololo Independence Grounds, was organized by the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development.
The initiative aims to enhance the mobility of traditional leaders, enabling them to participate more effectively in the implementation of national programs such as the Parish Development Model (PDM) and the Emyooga wealth creation programme.
Speaking at the event, Hon Alupo emphasized the vital role of cultural institutions in preserving Uganda’s heritage and promoting government development efforts, particularly ahead of the 2026 general elections.
“These leaders are key partners in fostering peace and unity across the country. Their involvement in government programs helps to improve service delivery and promote inclusive development,” she said.
Alupo also delivered a message from President Yoweri Museveni, who praised the restoration of cultural institutions as a tribute to Uganda’s ancestors. The President noted that traditional leaders historically united clans into kingdoms such as Buganda, Bunyoro, and Ankole, laying the foundation for national peace and stability.
Museveni’s message further described cultural institutions as custodians of Uganda’s languages, customs, and traditions core pillars of national identity and cohesion. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting cultural heritage sites and promoting cultural tourism as part of its broader development agenda.
While details on the number of vehicles and recipient institutions were not disclosed at the event, the Ministry of Gender indicated that all recognized cultural leaders were represented.
The government said the vehicles will support leaders in reaching remote areas within their jurisdictions, strengthening grassroots mobilization and social service outreach.
Vice President Alupo urged the beneficiaries to use the vehicles responsibly and continue championing national unity and development within their communities.
The handover comes as Uganda intensifies efforts to engage all sectors of society in advancing its Vision 2040 targets and preparing for peaceful elections in 2026.
