Police in Kaliro are investigating circumstances under which three family members lost their lives in a burning house in Kaliro Town Council, Busoga district.

Muhammad Koire, his wife, and their son Hamuza Swagga were burnt to death on December 9, 2024, in Budini village in the Kaliro Town Council, Busoga district.

Speaking to the media on December 10, 2024, the Busoga North regional police spokesperson, Mike Kassadha, confirmed the incident and revealed that the deceased and the suspects in custody had been fighting for a piece of land for years.

However, he declined to share the names of the culprits for fear of compromising the evidence of the crime.

’’The names of the suspects will be revealed after we have finalized our investigations and report so that our evidence is not jeopardized and also to arrest the right culprits so they face justice,’’ Kassadha said.

Kassadha reassured the locals of the accountability of those responsible for this heinous act and urged them to refrain from mob justice and utilize legal methods to resolve conflicts.

According to one of the neighbors of the deceased Munsa Kakaire, several efforts to extinguish the fire were unsuccessful before Koire and his family members could make it out alive.

The bodies of the deceased were taken to Bumanya Health Centre IV mortuary for postmortem examinations.

On June 29, 2024, four members of the Mudasi family were killed in a shooting incident in Namatale Village, Mayuge District. The deceased included family head Isaac Mudasi Buyinza and three of his children.

Police investigations suggest that the motive behind the attack was a land dispute within the family.

These incidents reflect a troubling trend of escalating violence tied to land disputes in Uganda, particularly affecting families and communities involved in legal battles over property rights.
