UN Rights Chief Türk Calls for Human Rights Action Amid Rising Global Crises

Türk pointed to rising armed conflicts, attacks on civilians, and the recent escalation involving the United States, Israel, and Iran, which has disrupted global energy markets and risks triggering hunger and health crises.

United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk has urged Mongolia and the international community to regard human rights as a practical source of solutions to national and global crises.

Türk delivered the remarks on May 10th, 2026, during an event hosted by the National Human Rights Commission of Mongolia.

He commended Mongolia’s tradition of peaceful dialogue and multilateral cooperation, noting its nuclear-weapons-free status, contributions to United Nations peacekeeping operations, and upcoming hosting of the UN desertification conference.

“Mongolia’s history of dialogue and diplomacy is a strong foundation for the future,” Türk said.

Türk, however, warned that freedom declines gradually when societies stop asking questions.

Türk pointed to rising armed conflicts, attacks on civilians, and the recent escalation involving the United States, Israel, and Iran, which has disrupted global energy markets and risks triggering hunger and health crises.

“Human rights are the bedrock of a more peaceful world based on stronger, more resilient societies,” he stated.

He identified three urgent priorities for action, including sustainable and inclusive development aligned with Mongolia’s Vision 2050, climate action to address temperatures rising three times faster than the global average, and corporate accountability in mining and digital technologies.

Türk cautioned against an “authoritarian playbook” that relies on vague security laws to silence critics, control media, and weaken independent institutions.

He called for a new global alliance bringing together governments, civil society businesses, and academia to advance dignity, equality, and justice.

The High Commissioner reaffirmed the United Nations’ support for Mongolia’s efforts to strengthen civic space, safeguard human rights defenders, and promote an open democratic society.

The visit highlighted Mongolia’s role as a constructive participant in international human rights, peace, and environmental cooperation.
