Police in Kyesiiga have arrested three suspects involved in the brutal murder of a 45-year-old Burundian national in Masaka district.

The arrests were made on December 19, 2024, in Kyamuzimba village in Kyesiiga sub-county, Masaka district, after locals made a manhunt for these criminals in wetlands in the area.

The deceased has been identified as Joseph Sentongo, a resident of Kikondo village in Kyesiiga sub-county, Masaka district.

The defense secretary of Kyamuzimba village, Emmanuel Nsamba, confirmed the incident.

He, however, added that the suspects have been on the run after they killed Sentongo, a fellow colleague they were working with at a farm in Kikondo village.

’’We worked together with the local leaders and locals to successfully carry out a manhunt for these criminals, and I am pleased that now they are in police custody, ready to face justice,’’ Nsamba said.

Speaking to the media on December 19, 2024, the Greater Masaka police spokesperson, Twaha Kasirye, confirmed the arrest of these suspects and revealed that investigations are still underway for more suspects involved in this murder.

According to Kasirye, these suspects were arrested because they killed the Burundian national on Tuesday, 17 December 2024, at around 3:00 pm in the evening, in Kyamuzimba village, Kyesiiga sub-county, after he got into a fight with them in a local bar called Birungi’s bar.

They later got out of the bar and continued fighting heatedly, exchanging profanities amongst each other, and this led to them stabbing him brutally with a sharp knife; he died on the spot, and they dumped his body in Kyamuzimba village.

’’Currently these suspects are at Kyesiiga police station; however, they were found with the jacket of the deceased, which is evidence and an exhibit going to be used in our investigations,’’ Kasirye said.

Kasirye also indicated that more suspects are still at large but are expected to be captured soon as investigations continue.

This tragic incident not only highlights the ongoing issues of violence within the community but also serves as a reminder of the need for collaborative efforts between the police and local residents to prevent such occurrences in the future. The commitment shown by community leaders and citizens in pursuing justice is commendable and sets a precedent for collective action against crime.
