Police Hunt Kasese Mother for Abandoning 2-Year-Old Child

ASP Jane Ngelese, the head of the Child and Family Protection Unit at Kasese Division in the Rwenzori East Region, confirmed the incident and revealed that investigations were underway to identify the mother responsible for abandoning the minor.

Police in Kasese are on a manhunt for the parents of a 2-year-old toddler who was found abandoned in Kisigazi cell, Kasese Municipality.

The baby was discovered on Sunday, March 9 2025, after it was dumped and abandoned in Kisigazi cell, in Nyamwamba division, Kasese Municipality.

Preliminary reports show that some locals who were heading to the well to fetch water found a young woman believed to be in her twenties with the said child; however, upon their return, they found the baby dumped at one of the locals’ houses with a bag of baby clothes.

ASP Jane Ngelese, the head of the Child and Family Protection Unit at Kasese Division in the Rwenzori East Region, confirmed the incident and revealed that investigations were underway to identify the mother responsible for abandoning the minor.

Ngelese disclosed that the toddler was dumped at Jamimah Muhindo’s house, a local in Kisigazi cell, who has already expressed readiness to look after the child but under certain rules.

’’Muhindo has voiced her willingness to care for the 2-year-old toddler, provided that the relatives step in to support the minor, particularly in case of illness and education expenses,’’ Ngelese added.

Ngelese urged parents to take responsibility for their children, highlighting the alarming rise in cases of child abandonment in Kasese, which she described as deeply concerning.

As investigations continue, authorities call upon the public to come forward with any information that could help locate the child’s parents.

Kasese district has witnessed a concerning rise in cases of child abandonment and neglect.

In January 2025, a five-year-old boy named Gilbert Mumbere, a resident of Kiruli I A village in Maliba sub county, Kasese, was rescued by good Samaritans after he was found malnourished and neglected by his parents.

Currently he is under treatment at St. Paul’s Hospital in Kasese Municipality and is slowly recovering.
