MEXICO: Train Accident in Oaxaca Kills 13, Dozens Injured

Police in Mexico have started investigations into a deadly train accident that claimed the lives of 13 people and left over 90 others nursing serious injuries.

The incident happened on Sunday, December 28th, 2025, after a passenger train carrying 250 people partially wrecked in Oaxaca, Southern Mexico. Videos circulating online show several stranded passengers standing next to the overturned train cars.

According to Salomon Jara, Oaxaca Governor, the train plunged into a ravine while en route to the municipality of Matias Romero.

“Personnel from the state coordination of civil protection and risk management, state traffic police, and ambulances are already providing support, in coordination with the Secretariat of the Navy. We will continue to provide updates,” Salomon said.

In a public statement issued by Mexican President, Claudia Sheinbaum, on X earlier on Monday, December 29, 2025, she confirmed the deaths and directed the Secretary of the Navy and other senior personnel to travel to the area and assist the families of those affected.

The Interoceanic Train was inaugurated in 2023 by then President Andres Manuel López Obrador.

The rail service is part of a broader effort to promote train travel in southern Mexico and develop infrastructure along the Tehuantepec Isthmus, a narrow strip of land separating the Pacific Ocean from the Gulf of Mexico.

The country’s Attorney General’s office announced that it is opening an investigation to determine the cause of the accident.
