Mathias Mpuuga, the Leader of Opposition in Parliament (LOP) has demanded for a response from government to have clear explanations on accountability of missing persons and other violations they listed in their demands.
Mpuuga made the remarks while addressing the media at Parliament on November 14, 2023, saying that the NRM regime shouldn’t divert the opposition from the fight to end killings, human rights violations and missing persons in Uganda.
“So currently, we want to inform the world that we are still out of these plenary meetings until such a time that we have received a satisfactory response on the issues we raised,” Mpuuga stated.
He said that although plenary sitting was set to resume on November 14, 2023, if there are no plans to respond to the issues raised, the opposition will stay away from the proceedings until government officially communicates on how the issues raised will be addressed.
The LOP emphasised that, it is disturbing that the NRM regime still remains stubborn, and very arrogant, adding that, he heard the minister for information speaking at their media centre, stating that there’s nothing comprehensive they can state.
On Monday, November 13, 2023, while addressing the media in regard to resumption and boycott of the plenary sitting, Mpuuga said that the journalists should not misrepresent him and his office, adding that, he is never buckle at blackmail.
“I also see some attempts at blackmailing me and my office, I follow it. I want to advise that whoever is being financed, please take your pay check but report what we say,” said Mpuuga.
Mpuuga stated that through blackmail, it will not help the cause of citizens and called upon everyone to stop diverting them into small things.
On October 19, 2023, opposition MPs stormed out of Parliament after rejecting a government report regarding the fight to end killings, missing persons and human rights violations in Uganda.
