FUFA Unveils Bold Strategy to Professionalize Women’s Football and Empower the Girl Child

“Progress may be gradual, but that’s the right approach. Football thrives when there is investment at every level, and through time we have strengthened our commercial capabilities, secured government backing, and benefitted from increased support from FIFA,” Magogo added.

FUFA President Hon. Moses Hassim Magogo addressing the audience during the launch of the FUFA Women Super League Commercial Strategy at the Imperial Royale Hotel on Tuesday, 10th February, 2026.

The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) has reaffirmed its steadfast commitment to developing women’s football in Uganda, emphasizing commercial growth, infrastructure development, and targeted investments in the girl child.

This announcement was made by FUFA President Hon. Moses Hassim Magogo during the launch of the FUFA Women Super League Commercial Strategy at the Imperial Royale Hotel today, Tuesday, 10th February, 2026.

The event also marked the rollout of a pilot initiative under the FIFA Women’s Football Development Programme, with Uganda and Romania selected as the only two countries worldwide to trial this innovative commercialization project.

Reflecting on the journey of women’s football in Uganda, Magogo recalled a time when aspiring female players had no dedicated teams and were forced to compete alongside boys.

“Women’s football in Uganda has come a long way. In the early days, girls who loved the game had no choice but to play alongside boys. Over time, dedicated teams were formed, competitions emerged, and stars began to shine. That is how we have reached the level we are at today,” he said.

Magogo expressed gratitude to FIFA for its confidence in Uganda’s progress, extending special thanks to FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

He highlighted that strategic planning, government support, enhanced commercial capabilities, and increased FIFA funding have been instrumental in professionalizing competitions and strengthening football programs across the country.

“Progress may be gradual, but that’s the right approach. Football thrives when there is investment at every level, and through time we have strengthened our commercial capabilities, secured government backing, and benefitted from increased support from FIFA,” Magogo added.

The FUFA President emphasized the importance of legal protections and infrastructure in enabling commercialization.

“You cannot commercialize when your rights are not protected by law, and you cannot package football without infrastructure,” he said.

Through collaborations with stakeholders and the government, FUFA has secured essential facilities to support the growth of women’s football.

FUFA’s long-term strategy focuses on expanding grassroots participation, professionalizing top-tier competitions, and achieving international competitiveness.

Magogo highlighted a broader cultural shift in Uganda, noting that parents and communities are increasingly supporting girls in football as a pathway to education and professional careers.

“Today, parents and relatives have accepted that a girl child can play football, get an education, and even earn a living. That, for me, is a big success,” he stated.

The FUFA President emphasized the need for well-structured professional clubs to provide facilities, welfare support, motivation, and high-quality coaching, recognizing that developing talent requires substantial resources.

FUFA has also implemented governance reforms to boost female representation in its General Assembly, Executive Committee, and Secretariat, alongside initiatives like the Women in Football programme.

At the continental level, Magogo has been a strong advocate for women’s football, demonstrating intentional support for the sport within Africa.

Ending his address, Magogo issued a call to action, urging stakeholders, institutions, and individuals to invest in the girl child and in women’s football.

The launch of the FUFA Women Super League Commercial Strategy is a major achievement in elevating the commercial and developmental landscape of women’s football in Uganda, aligning with global efforts to grow the game sustainably.
