The Kampala Metropolitan South Police, together with the flying squad unit, have successfully intercepted a vehicle at Kutano-Nakawuka Road transporting two stolen cows for sale to abattoirs in Kyengera and Nateete.
According to Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigire, the suspect’s vehicle containing the stolen cattle was successfully intercepted on January 25, 2024, following a tip, and a team from the Kampala Metropolitan South Police and the Flying Squad Unit flung into action.
The suspect, Ismah Mugema, 32, upon being checked, attempted to evade, which prompted the officers to shoot the vehicle tyres, and two live cows were discovered in the back seat and trunk. He sustained injuries and is currently receiving medical attention at Mulago Hospital under police custody.
’’Based on a tip, the Flying Squad team was made aware of a suspect who was bringing livestock to abattoirs in Kyengera and Nateete for sale in a UAZ 801Y Land Cruiser vehicle, and when he arrived at the checkpoint, the officers were already aware and prepared to stop him,’’ Owoyesigire noted.
Authorities suspect the stolen cattle to have been stolen from Matugga; however, investigations are ongoing to determine the origin of the stolen cattle. Additionally, authorities have urged anyone with information on stolen cows to come forward to the Nateete Police Station, where the matter is under thorough investigation.
Owoyesigire said that despite this incident serving as more evidence of the ongoing issue of cattle theft across the nation, law enforcement is still committed to putting a stop to these crimes.
