Ex- Uganda Cranes Star Battles for Life After Stroke

Former Uganda Cranes midfielder Mike Sserumaga is in critical condition at Mulago National Referral Hospital after suffering a stroke at his home.

At the beginning of this year, the gifted former Uganda Cranes playmaker was on a three-fold mission in the ongoing Stanbic Uganda Cup fairytale run with the WhatsApp group-inspired club, Football Classroom.

‘The Football Classroom’ team

The Football Classroom, an eclectic mix of journalists, referees, administrators, and passionate fans saw the left-footed player who lit up the pitches for SC Villa, Police, Vipers, and URA spearhead a team born out of a casual WhatsApp group.

Fellow players who visited Sserumaga described his condition as worrying and expressed deep concern over his health.

The tragedy has sparked an outpouring of support from fans and former teammates.

Social media has been flooded with messages for the star, as images showing him lying in the hospital.


Gedeon Kwrikiriza a media personality on his X page said that, “While Museveni promises 1.2B to Uganda Cranes players, a former National player Mike Sserumaga is on the floor of Mulago hospital fighting for his life. Dear Moses Magogo, will you give a speech on Mike’s burial? What will you say?,” he questioned.

Many media users expressed shock and sadness at the sight of the former midfielder in such a vulnerable state.

Shamim Nambassa, former Makerere University Guild President said that, “not even his past service to the nation spared him from lying on the floor at our referral hospital. Uganda deserves better.”

Sserumaga’s sudden health condition has not only raised alarm for his wellbeing but also called for the urgent need to accessible and adequate medical care for all Ugandans.

Friends, fans, and fellow athletes are calling for immediate support to ensure he receives the treatment he needs.
