Television Star Eric Dane, best known for his roles as Dr. Mark ‘McSteamy’ Sloan on Grey’s Anatomy and family patriarch Cal Jacobs on Euphoria, has died at the age of 53 following a battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

A statement from his family confirmed that Dane passed away peacefully on Thursday, 19th February, 2026, spending his final days surrounded by close friends, his devoted wife, and his daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world.

In April 2025, the California-born star announced his ALS diagnosis, a neurodegenerative disease affecting nerve cells, and devoted his remaining months to raising awareness, funding research, and supporting others battling the illness. But, by June 2025, he had lost function in his right arm, yet he continued to champion the cause.

Even as the actor continued raising ALS awareness, the fact that the disease progressed so fast, fast enough to claim his life in 10 months, has come as a shock to many, despite the well-known fact that ALS is fatal.

Dane was married to actress and model Rebecca Gayheart, with whom he had two children. Gayheart said her husband became a passionate advocate throughout his ALS journey, determined to help others facing the same fight.

“He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered. Eric cherished his fans and remained forever grateful for their overwhelming love and support,’’ she said.

Friends and colleagues frequently described Dane as fiercely proud of his daughters, with fatherhood remaining central to his identity even as his health declined.

Born on 9th November 1972 in San Francisco, California, Dane faced tragedy early in life when his father, a Navy officer, died from a gunshot wound when Eric was just seven.

After high school, he moved to Los Angeles to pursue acting, landing guest roles on Saved by the Bell, Married… With Children, Charmed, and a season on the medical drama Gideon’s Crossing. He made his television debut in The Wonder Years in 1993.

However, Dane rose to fame in the mid-2000s with his role as Dr. Mark Sloan on Grey’s Anatomy, which he portrayed from 2006 to 2012 and returned to in 2021.

He later starred as Cal Jacobs on HBO’s Euphoria, further cementing his status as a versatile actor. Dane also appeared in films such as X-Men: The Last Stand, Burlesque, Valentine’s Day, and Marley & Me, and played Captain Tom Chandler on the action drama series The Last Ship.

As tributes poured in from fans and industry peers, a clear image emerged; Eric Dane was not only a celebrated television star but also a devoted husband, father, and advocate whose final chapter was defined by resilience, reconciliation, and love.

Meanwhile in the face of ALS, he met his final chapter with courage and love, a legacy that extends well beyond the screen.

Dane’s passing marks the loss of a beloved actor whose professional achievements were matched by his unwavering commitment to family and the causes he cared about, leaving behind a legacy both on-screen and in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
