The Democratic Party leadership has urged the government to support inmate welfare through improving the health facilities in the Ugandan prisons.
This call stemmed from the circumstances surrounding the death of former Kawempe North MP Mohammed Ssegirinya.
While addressing the media at the party offices on Balintuma Road on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, Ismail Kirya, the DP party spokesperson, said that Ssegirinya’s health started deteriorating from the prison.
“Hon Ssegirinya asked for court bail several times, but because of the nature of his case, it was hard for the government to release him in time, yet they could not handle his case from the prison hospital,” Kirya said.
He urged his political allies to always distinguish politics from grieving, adding that Ssegirinya’s death could have been uniting them, but it again fueled more division.
“It’s absurd that he passed away and was laid to rest on Sunday; however, we want to appeal to all our comrades in politics to start differentiating politics and grieving,” he said.
He condoled with the family of the late Ssegirinya and said that he was advocating for human rights in the parliament and also promoting human rights.
Kawempe North MP Ssegirinya passed away on Thursday, January 9, 2025, at 12:10 pm at Lubaga Hospital, after a prolonged illness in prison that lasted several months.
