The Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) party president, Jimmy Akena, has revealed that the party is yet to amend the constitution to allow all party members to vote for the party president.

Speaking to the members of the press on December 18, 2024, at the party headquarters at Uganda House in Kampala, Akena said that all party members moving forward will be voting for their party president and not just delegates.

“I will propose to the next UPC Delegates Conference to amend the Party Constitution so that the Party President shall be elected by all members of the Party. This great idea is being brought with the understanding that all members should participate in electing their leader,” he said.

According to Akena, this move is meant to further leverage and get the whole party membership involved in determining their future and strengthen the party on the grassroots level through inclusivity.

“I believe that this will help consolidate and strengthen our grassroots ahead of the 2026 General Elections,” Akena added.

Akena, in his final remarks, confirmed that he is ready to represent UPC in the next 2026 general elections as the party flag bearer in the presidential elections.

“As UPC, we intend to make Uganda a better country, and that is why I will be offering myself for the highest office come 2026,” he stated.

Jimmy Akena is a son to the late former president Milton Obote and is the current UPC party president and an MP for Lira City East.
