The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) has recovered more than 30 herds of cattle in a security operation across parts of East Acholi, bringing relief to communities whose livelihoods have been threatened by persistent cattle rustling.
The operation, conducted by the UPDF 5 Infantry Division, was carried out under the ongoing security campaign, ‘Dumisha Usalama’ between 2nd and 4th February 2026, covering Lokokwai in Kitgum District, Amita Village in Abim District, and Loborom Village in Agago District.
During the three-day operation, UPDF troops neutralised four armed Karamojong warriors and recovered one AK-47 rifle with three rounds of ammunition, bows and arrows, and three mobile phones.
Major General Keith Katungyi the Commander of the 5 Infantry Division, said that the operation was aimed at safeguarding community livelihoods by protecting livestock, which remains a key source of income and food security in the region.
“Our priority is to protect the lives and property of civilians, especially livestock, which is the backbone of many households in East Acholi,” Katungyi said.
“These operations will continue to ensure communities live and work without fear,” He added.
Sustained deployments and heightened vigilance by the forces had ensured that no livestock was lost during the operation, with all animals in the affected areas secured.
“The presence of our troops has prevented criminal elements, and we have ensured that all cattle within the affected areas remain safe,” Katungyi said.
Cattle rustling has for years disrupted livelihoods and strained relations between neighbouring communities in northern and eastern Uganda, making security operations critical to restoring stability and economic activity.
The UPDF reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining peace and stability in East Acholi through sustained operations under Dumisha Usalama, noting that continued cooperation with local leaders and communities remains key to long-term security.
